Lily Mottahedan is a leading matrimonial finance junior ranked in Band 1 of Chambers and Partners. She was twice shortlisted Family Law Junior Barrister of the Year at the Chambers and Partners UK Bar Awards (2019 and 2023) (one of the very few junior barristers to have achieved this distinction) and was the ultimate winner in 2023 following in the footsteps of esteemed colleagues Simon Webster KC (2016 winner) and Richard Sear KC (2022 winner) when they were juniors.
Lily has substantial experience in complex financial remedy cases involving business valuations, offshore trusts, prenuptial agreements, and forum/jurisdiction disputes.
She was sole counsel in the SA v FA [2022] EWFC 115 a landmark forum non conveniens case in which the English court stayed an English divorce petition in favour of one issued by her client in the then new Abu Dhabi court for Non-Muslims and in SC v TC [2022] EWFC 67 in which she persuaded the court not to uphold a postnuptial agreement which was obtained by exploiting a vulnerable person and which in any event did not meet needs.
The latest edition of the directories describe her in the following terms:
- “Lily is head and shoulders above other barristers of her generation.”
- “A trusted advocate, well respected by both instructing solicitors and clients.”
- “She is thorough, detailed and very knowledgeable about a wide range of tricky aspects of family law and associated financial matters.”
- “Lily is quite exceptional.”
- “She is an absolutely brilliant international lawyer, who thoroughly
understands cases with a foreign dimension to them.”
Before coming to the Bar, Lily was an M&A banker at Bank of America Merrill Lynch but decided to transfer over to the Bar where she could combine her commercial and financial acumen with immediate client-facing work and written and oral advocacy.
Lily also has direct professional and personal experience of the art market which led her to obtain a Diploma in Art Law from the Institute of Art and Law with Distinction during her first maternity leave making her a go-to in cases involving substantial art collections.
Outside of work, Lily is married and has two young daughters. She loves tennis, skiing, contemporary art, ballet and theatre. She is a fluent French and Persian speaker.
