While continuing on an ad hoc basis to sit as a judge of the Family Court, Sir Peter upon retirement from the High Court Bench has returned as an Associate Member of the Chambers from which he practiced as Peter Singer QC before his appointment.
Appointed QC in 1987, until 1993 he practiced at the Bar for 25 years, principally throughout England and Wales but also abroad (at first instance and on appeal) in Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands. Sir Peter worked virtually exclusively on family cases, with an emphasis on matrimonial finance.
In 1991 he became Chairman of the Family Law Bar Association, and was before appointment to the Bench in 1993 a Vice-President of the European Chapter of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (now renamed the International Academy of Family Lawyers).
Throughout 18 years on the Family Division Bench Sir Peter heard and determined family cases Involving post-separation finance, disputes concerning children and their welfare, and many with an international dimension.
He retired from the Family Division High Court Bench, and re-joined Chambers in January 2011 as a Family Dispute Resolution Facilitator.
Since its inception in 1991 a member of the editorial board which produces the Family Law Bar Association’s publication At a Glance: Essential Court Tables for Financial Remedies (now in its 25th annual edition). One of the creators of and a contributor to both its companion software program @eGlance, and to the Duxbury calculator Capitalise. An editor of Financial Remedies Practice 2016 (5th edition 2016, Class Legal) and a contributor (the arbitration section) to Unlocking Matrimonial Assets on Divorce (3rd edition 2012, Jordans).
With arbitrator colleagues in 2012 he established the information and resource website FamilyArbitrator.com, for which they won the Jordans award as Most Innovative Family Lawyers of that year for their ‘pioneering approach’ to the development of arbitration as a dispute resolution process.
A regular contributor via lectures and discussions on family-law related topics (but especially Family Arbitration and Cross-Border Family Dispute Mediation, Child Abduction, Forced Marriage) at domestic and international conferences and seminars.
