After 24 hours “in custody”, we’re pleased to confirm that Senior Clerk Steve McCrone has now secured his freedom following this year’s Lock Up The Lawyers fundraiser in support of Maggie’s Centres.
As previously reported, Steve faced a series of entirely fictional but deeply suspicious charges, including allegedly spending 35 years in chambers, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award and somehow being named Senior Clerk of the Year in 2025. Questions remain, of course, but thankfully the legal process prevailed.
Behind the courtroom humour, however, sits a very serious cause.
Lock Up The Lawyers is a brilliantly entertaining fundraising initiative which sees members of the legal profession “arrested”, put on trial and challenged to raise bail money through donations. The event raises vital funds for Maggie’s, which provides free practical, emotional and financial support to cancer sufferers.
Demand for Maggie’s services continues to grow at a time when many people are facing delayed diagnoses, emotional strain and increasing financial pressures alongside cancer treatment. Its support is available free of charge, without appointments or referrals, offering help when life has been turned upside down.
“Lock Up The Lawyers was brilliant fun, but I was very relieved to secure my release in the end,” said Steve. “After being hauled before the court, handed a £1,500 bail target and spending the day jokingly ‘locked up’ with Paul Harris, Danny Chapman, Jon Bartlett and Georgina Gills, I was reminded just how generous and supportive the legal community can be. Most importantly, every donation helped support the incredible work Maggie’s does for people living with cancer and their families when they need it most.”
A huge thank you goes to everyone who has already supported Steve, contributed to the fundraiser and helped make the event such a resounding success. Your generosity genuinely makes a difference with the combined total raised so far now exceeding £50,000 (and rising!).
If you would still like to support Steve’s “bail application” and contribute to this fantastic cause, donations can still be made via the fundraising page here.
